I couldn't pass up some recent offerings on a couple stripped blem lower and upper receivers, so I find myself laying the foundation for another build. Looking at my first pistol build and leaning towards the 6.8. Interested in the ballistic difference between various barrel lengths, more specifically, how short can I go while still maintaining adequate velocity/energy for thin skinned game(deer) to ~100yds. We can legally use a handgun in our shotgun only zones, so I'd like to build it as a viable option whether I end up using it as such or not, hence my preference for the 6.8 over the .223/5.56. I understand bullet selection will be an important variable as well. I currently load both the 110 ProHunters and 115 Custom Comps for my 18" ARP, but would be open to other projectiles. I do not plan to SBR this in the future, nor do I ever intend to run a can.
A) What pistol barrel length/twist offering would provide the best balance between terminal velocity, reliability, and a compact pistol platform?
B) Should I be considering any other caliber? 7.62x39? .300BO? I haven't really explored the < 16" barrel territory
I'm sitting just fine on 6.8 and .223 Wylde "rifle" configurations and set up to reload for both calibers.
