After my poor performance at 600yd decided I needed some more practice at 100.
Took my 17 pound AR to the HoneyIsland Shooting Range Sunday.
Shot up the rest of the 80gr CFE223 loads that didn't do so great in Pascagoula and guess what?
They didn't do well at 100 either. Groups around 1.5 MOA.
I must have done something wrong with the whole batch.
The purpose of this range trip was to zero the Warne 20 MOA mount and play around with jump.
Loaded up some touching (very light jam), and tried for 10, 20, 30, and 0.040" jump.
The -0.010" turned out -0.008" so I changed each bunch to 8 thou shorter.
(-008, -016, -024, and -032)
Used the same load of IMR4350 for all of them. Most groups were under 1MOA @ 100yds.
Since I have excuses for bad groups, these might have just been luck.
I also took two boxes of factory 85gr RDF. Those also shot under an MOA but at a different POI than the 80/CFE223 and 80/IMR4350 handloads.
Results for this one range trip?
The CFE223 loads, while faster resulted in some hard extractions (manual, no gas) and soot of the necks.
The IMR4350 loads and the factory 85's extracted easily.
The 80 ELD seems to like to jump. The shorter lengths had smaller groups.
With the current velocities I get with the 80 and 85's the 80 has less drift and drop at the ranges I shoot at.
450yd twice a year in South Florida for a fun competition and 600yds F-Open at Pascagoula.
I will need to work up with the 85 to benefit.
For reference I'm using 2980 for the 80's and 2865 for the 85's.
At least I got most of them at clearance prices
The Nosler brass survived.
I'll post a picture, realizing this could have been a fluke, caused by luck or planet alignment
I usually hover right at 1MOA.
Started on the plate just off to the right, to adjust for the new 20MOA mount, then moved to the bottom dot.
Was able to track right in to the dot in 5 shots. Then on to the other dots.
Then the groups started opening up to my normal 1MOA.
Next trip I will try just a little more jump. Between 20 and 40. The 0.024" seem best.
At the end of the day compared the remaining 0.032" jump loads to the factory loads.
Note the right shift of the 85's. Happened all day switching between the 80's and the 85's. Why??????
