Default 6.8 Claimed to be inaccuater after 200 yrds

I just got back from a gun show in Fredericksburg, Va. I spoke with a gun dealer who said that I should avoid buying a 6.8 SPC (I didn't tell him I've already ordered one in early Dec. 08 through Rock River Arms (RRA).) because of the barrel twist being most likely a 1 in 10 inch twist (which the RRA rifle will have). He claimed that the high twist rate created a condition where by the bullet upon firing does not engage the rifling until much further down the barrel, imparting a wobble(yawing) effect that doesn't fully manifest itself until after the bullet has traveled at least 100 yards. He said the 6.8 wasn't much good for any kind of hunting accuracy after 200 yards.

I find this claim to be a bit specious in light of all I've read on the forums here. Can anyone pass judgment on this gentleman's claim please?

    Regards,

I'm pretty sure this guy is full of it.

There are some longer range issues with the 6.8, but it's not meant to be a 800 yard line drive tack driver.

1/10 twist only has issues with high pressure loads. It should stabalize most 6.8 rounds out there. (don't have a 6.8 yet, but just from reading reloading data, etc)

Edit: also I was under the impression that most rounds don't stabalize immediatly after leaving the barrel. Most bullets tend to settle down in flight. But you're not going to have the issue of 1/12 twist AR shooting heavy bullets where it doesn't stabalize the bullet.

    Thats BS....!
I read a post on here that I believe was copied from AR15.com and it had a guy that shot an Elk from about 400-600 yards out. With a 16" barrel. My guess is this guy is on the payroll for a 5.56 only manufacturer. Others will be along to confirm these rumors are not true.

More likely, he does not carry 6.8 rifles and would rather you buy what he has.

I was at the show on Friday, and I can tell you that about the only person there worth a damn in terms of knowledge is Tony, from Tony's Uppers, and he's even been funny as of late with anything other than 5.56... Don't believe anything at that show, they are just salesmen, trying hard to push an overinflated price tag on their products.

I've taken my 18" 6.8 shooting at 600 yards three times now. The first time I went I posted pics here -- about 10" at 600 yards (just a tad over 1.5 MOA, out of a semi-auto AR platform) with 10 rounds. The other times I had 9" and 9.5" max spreads. This is just one observation that runs counter to the perceived wisdom.

The evidence in this review and accompanying chart would seem to successfully refute his claims.

Only one rifle more than 3 moa even at 650 yards. Several were sub-moa even at 300 yards.

There is alot of people in the gun industry that only follow their little piece of the action. They sell what's in their catalogs and that's it. They don't follow new developments. They read gun articles and look at brochures and that's what they know. Every once in awhile you will find a person that is very open minded and looks outside the box. 99% of the people that make comments on this caliber or that one. Have never had any experience with it. Just what they have seen and heard in the media.

There alot of great people on this site that have experience in multiple fields. They have shot the 6.8 for years now. Several have made kills on animals from all yardages. I alone have killed 5 deer this year alone. I shoot crows every weekend with my 6.8. I have shot several over 300 yards. My 6.8 goes to the farm everyday, if it needs to be got, it gets it. The gun I carry is a light weight remington 700. It shoots very accurate out to 400 yards. Never wished I had one of my others with me. It has the old chamber in it so I hand load sierra 110 pro hunters to 2500 fps. They do everything I could ask for.

I would put the 6.8 against any caliber out there to 400 yards. It's hard for me to justify a shot over that while I'm hunting. Too many variables come into play. I don't like big rifles and the big recoil that comes with them. I like being able to see the bullet impact. The 6.8 is perfect for me. Maybe not for everyone, but it's right for me. It is an accurate cartridge and very efficient. Don't let someone make you wish you would have not ordered your Rock River. I think you will enjoy the heck out of it. The above post back up some of the accuracy facts.
