    thanks a lot
I have always been intrigued by the mil dot system but never have taken the time to try to learn it
I saw this and since my 308 was scopeless at present I ordered a mildot scope for it to learn on.
just seems like something I need to do to round out my shooting knowledge

    much appreciated

Why do the calculations using inches/yards instead of meters? I've always known a mil as the angle that produces a meter at 1000 meters... but that was artillery.

Thats because the military after joining NATO uses the metric system.

Think about this. @ 1000m 1 mil is 1 meter in diameter right? Well at 1000yds 1 mil is 1 yard in diameter also.

So if you wanted to stack 1000 soda cans in a line, at the end of it 1 mil is 1 soda can in diameter also.

    That is how Mils work.

Interesting, and thanks for the reply. I didn't know (or remember?) that mil factor worked for yards also. There was an interesting demo at
http://www.mil-dot.com/index.htm Right hand side, Test Your Mildot skills.

    Now I'm interested....

    Default mil/mil

It gets even easier when you get to scopes that have mil based reticles and mil based adjustment knobs....... a lot less math.

My eye lids got heavy after about the fourth line. I'm sure this was super exciting for some of you, but way...I mean WAY over my head and my interest level. I'll have to stick with cross hairs at 100 yards. At my age (68) the only thing I'm going to be shooting with my Stag Arms will be at eye ball length.
