Default How to start purchase of an SBR

Since the 6.8 is as deadly with a 12" barrel, as it is with a 16" barrel, i am looking to making my gun shorter.

    mayber even shorter than 12".

so what i would like to know is how to start the purchase of an SBR, or any class 3 for that matter.

    i know i need:
    1. a trust, or i could go the long way with the cleo and fbi bla bla bla, so i will call it legal stuff.
    2. a gun.

    so what comes first?
do i go get my trust, which i dont have now, ready first?
or do i need a gun and serial number before i can start the process?

for instance, i am really considering one of the LWRC 68's in an SBR.
being they are not on the market yet is there anything i can do to get the process started?
can i call LWRC and tell them my intention, put money down and get the required info from them?

its a chicken and the egg question, what comes first?
    thanx for the input.

Since I know where you live you will need a trust. Ch McManus and Sheriff will not sign off.

Do the trust as its most flexible and less expensive.

Then when that's done (takes a few days) you can work on getting the lower

You need to find a local (in your state) FFL-SOT (Class 3 dealer) that you feel comfortable working with. They should take the time to answer all your questions on the process and they should know if your CLEO will sign or if you need to do a trust. Find out if they will order what you want and how much they charge for a transfer.

If you want to do a trust start it now. You need the trust first.

You purchase the NFA item (pay for it).
Unless you buy something in stock from your dealer, it gets transferred to your local dealer.
The dealer and you fill out the F4 and submit it.
Your NFA item stays at the dealer until the F4 comes back approved.
You get to take it home.

OR... You can make an SBR out of your own rifle.
    Submit F1.
    Get your lower engraved.
    F1 comes back approved.
Get the short upper for your SBR.

No the lower. You can have many short uppers to fit on 1 lower.

I know one of our members is well respected for creating Trusts (Sean Cody) http://www.texasnfatrust.com/ and you can also go with a service like the Texas Law Shield NFA program (a group of lawyers in Houston) http://tlsnfa.com/.

I went with the Texas Law Shield NFA team for my trust but I wouldn't hesitate to use Sean and all of the feedback I've seen on him is very good. Both are very good choices from what I know.

thanx bugg77 i will look into it them.

i was wondering how people got so many SB uppers, the NFA tax alone is a killer, but registering just one lower makes sense!

but for a supressor it is a tax stamp per right?

Bugg gave you good advise on who to use for trust lawyers. I personally used Sean Cody, but I have heard Texas Law Shield is pretty solid as well. When I called Sean the conversation turned into an hour long discussion on the certain 6.8 suppressors and what would work best for me. The man is really into this stuff so he will help you out as much as possible. Also I had a follow up question for him about some documents. I expected to get voice mail as I called about 7:30 PM, but he answered the phone and helped me out. This is great service, especially since I had already paid for the trust months before and he really wasnt obligated to take anymore time free of charge to answer legal questions. Within first contactI had a completed trust emailed to me in about 3 days and I then went on a NFA spending spree.

On the whole LWRC thing. You may be waiting a while before those are released. So factor the wait for them to release the upper/lower sets and full rifles as well as the 4-6 month wait from the ATF.
