Well that is a whole 'nuther thread. One that never changes any minds but is full of entertaining yet disproportionate ratio of expert analysis / anecdotal conjecture.

+1 The Magpul Dynamics shotgun DVD was an eye opener for me. The scenarios they ran for home defense situations highlight the collateral damage concerns.

My shotgun application for HD is in the "safe room", once everyone is tucked away behind me in a corner of the house I know anything in front is a threat.

On of the best overall all purpose rounds (in a true SHTF scenario or HD scenario) would have to be Hornady 110gr BTHP. Very accurate, can be pushed to 2700 fps relatively easily, and not overly expensive. And yes, it will kill deer and hogs with proper shot placement....

Would 130 gr. VLDs be overkill?

I have a bunch of 110 bthp, 110 Pro Hunters and 85 MPG's that should be good I would think for general scenarios. I have quite a few 100 grain Accubonds and 120SST's if need be.

I only handload for 6.8, so don't know about commercial loads.

I've been ordering the 110 Sierra pro hunter tac loads from SSA for my SHTF round. I'm running a 10.5 Inch SBR and I was comparing the lowest possible expansion velocity between the bullets offered when I was considering what to order since I'm losing velocity with my stubby pipe. They supposedly still expand around 1700 FPS while other rounds were around 1900 FPS minimum. I could be looking at this all wrong or have gathered skewed information on the interwebs but that is just my .02

+1... We have two incredible SHTF/HD loads: the Hornady 110gr. BTHP and the 100/110gr. Accubonds. The Accubonds are by far the best projectiles we have for almost any scenario. Lead core, bonded bullets give you the widest performance envelope in a multitude of environments.

Here is what Doc has to say on the subject:

"For LE and other individuals not restricted by the Hague convention, because of their good terminal performance across a wide spectrum of potential engagement scenarios, the bonded barrier blind projectiles have moved ahead of the fragmenting OTM loads we previously recommended, as the best general purpose loads available.

The better bonded loads like TBBC, are definitely MORE effective than the TSX style all copper bullets, as they expand better, retain more mass, and offer a larger surface area, especially through intermediate barriers.

The Barnes all copper TSX bullets are great projectiles and offer good penetration through barriers, however, when first hitting a laminated automobile windshield intermediate barrier, most TSX bullets exhibit less expansion than bonded JSP’s, as the Barnes jacket either collapses at the nose, the jacket "petals" fold back against the core, or the "petals" are torn off; this results in a caliber size projectile configured a lot like a full wadcutter, leading to deep penetration. While acceptable, it does mean that there are better choices."

After the 90gr. Gold Dot is released, we will have two of the best SD/SHTF loadings of any AR caliber.

"They (religions) are all alike, founded on fables and mythology."

I was leaning towards the accubonds, that about seals the deal.

I absolutely do not understand all this Zombie ****. Is it a joke? I have seen ammo advertised with Zombie pix, and targets with Zombies. This only makes gun owners appear to be mindless weirdos. Come on guys, let's try to appear like we can be responsible enough to own firearms. If this is just harmless joking, ok, forgive my ranting. I am fairly new to this forum and maybe I don't understand this infantile appearing joking around. But if I question the mentality of this Zombie ****, just think what the liberals could do with this. Think about this....the term "Assault Rifles" started from gun dealers trying to make sales, enticing immature buyers. Then the liberals tapped into it and then the "Assault Rifle" legislation started. An Ar-15 rifle is in no way an assault rifle. Shame on the money hungry arms dealers for placing them in this category. Ok, I'm done....

I myself am tired of the zombie shows and over the top marketing of that sort of merchandise. I just used the term as as an easily understandable description of a SHTF scenario.
