Are these currently "the" mag to run for the 6.8? I'm doing research on the 6.8 currently, but want to start picking up some peripherals here soon, e.g. ammo and mags. Going to be running factory ammo for now, probably the Remy 115g UMC rounds.
Yes...they are.
However I would suggest you look at other 6.8 ammunition than the Remington. Those are underpowered and not as accurate as other choices. They also use large primer brass which is not considered as desirable as small primer brass and makes the once fired brass less popular if you intend to resell.
Take a look at Hornady 110g HPBT, Hornady 120SST, SSA 110 Pro Hunters or SSA 115g OTM's. If you can buy in bulk (500-1000 rds) the choices from GTG Amunition are very cost effective, use SSA brass and are accurate.

300 AAC Blackout Chambering Cancelled:
Some time ago, Savage announced it would be chambering the Model 10 Precision Carbine in 300 AAC Blackout. Since that time, we have tested many variants of this cartridge in various barrel lengths and rates of twist. This exhaustive testing left us quite unsatisfied with the accuracy we were able to get from the subsonic loads in this chambering. Accuracy with the lighter, faster loads in this caliber was actually quite good. But we believe the real value in this cartridge lies in the use of subsonic loads for suppressed rifles. Therefore we have decided to scrap the project.
It is our understanding that pushing these heavy, slow bullets presents challenges not found in typical loadings and that our experience is not unique. Subsequently, many in the industry have simply adopted a lower standard for accuracy for these subsonic loads. While this does seem reasonable and we don't criticize any in our industry that have taken this approach, it just won't work for Savage.
Our brand was built on accuracy and we are too protective of our reputation for building the most accurate factory rifles available. We would rather walk away from this opportunity than sell a product that requires an explanation.

Thanks for the info. I'm currently not seeing anything 6.8 related on GTG's website but I did email them.
Is there anything else you would recommend for range plinking?
thanks
He cannot list 6.8 ammo on his web site due to contract restrictions with SSA. However there are several threads here that will give you the ordering info you need:

For plinking...Tula will have a cheap round in early 2013 as will Federal but expect the Federal to obviously be more expensive. It is hoped we will see ammo under $10 / box within a few months.

Great. Thanks for the info.
Ditto on Remy 6.8 ammo - not so accurate - frustrating. I bought 5 boxes and after the 2nd box gave the rounds to the kids to shoot. I load the Remy with Pro hunters for my kids to shoot. I only have 100 rounds so when they are gone they are gone and the kids go back to the AR556.
Has anyone confirmed that they actually do have these mags "in stock"? I never saw any confirmation that they were being shipped yet.
I'll let you know when they ship out.
