    Default What Barrel Nut Grease

I have read the Technical Manual and know that it calls for "GREASE, MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE MIL-G-21164." Most people seem use/recommend the Aeroshell 33MS. My Question is... What do you use H?

    Thanks is advance.

Really anything will work. muti-purpose, white lithium etc. The anti-seize is very good but gets all over everything and shows up like a sore thumb on black anodizing.

I used anti-seize, but I use that stuff on pretty much everything that screws together. Just be careful - like H said, the stuff gets EVERYWHERE

    AS 33MS
Valvoline VV 632 is not mil spec but it's close to the approved Aero Shell formulation and easier to find locally.

Anti-seize compound is usually full of suspended metals and that is a no-no for the barrel nut.
The suspended metals is what makes the mess as they wedge into every micro crevice they're exposed to.

Why? I have used anti-seize on almost every thread I fasten and even in high performance engines as a break-in grease (rolling engine by hand until oil pump primes and move fluid to the head, NOT a dry start grease), not the best use for it but works well there, what would it do to a barrel nut that would be detrimental? Copper, zinc, graphite, or some combo there of, should not be detrimental to anything seeing that they are all self lubricating metals, just like brass and bronze, and the mineral oil (or what ever oil used in your anti-seize) will stop the galvanic corrosion caused by steel-aluminum contact. I see a win-win, not a no-no.

I ended up using loctite c5-a anti-seize. This is a copper based anti-seize good up to ~1800 degrees.

Aspp and I had this conversation before, we both kept to our standpoints.
As long as you don't use a standard copper/graphite/zinc/silver based anti-seize you'll be fine.
Those metals, with the added presence of moisture, can increase the rate of galvanic corrosion.
If he planned on getting water in his engines it might be a problem, but I doubt he ever plans on that. :P

In simple terms, and to keep the debate going, just use white lithium grease from your LOCAL parts store (don't support china-mart.)
All in all, it's not a big deal unless you feel the need to abuse the crap out of your rifle for years on end, and even then its no big deal. Youll burn out the barrel ages beforehand if it even starts to corrode.
    I love you Aspp..

I've used muzzle loader breech plug grease or spark plug anti-seize with no issues.
