    Default Heat sensitive barrels

Are there barrels that are extremely heat sensitive?

The barrel in question is a 26" stainless fluted barrel on a Weatherby Mk 5. I just returned from the range and it seems to shoot a lot better when I wait a one minute between shots. It took 3 shots to get on paper and my next 4 shots where for a group. The first 2 shot for group were touching the 3rd still under and inch and the 4th opened up to about 3 inches. I waited about 10-15 minutes to let it cool and then fired 4 shots waiting 1 minute between shots. This 4 shot group was all under 1 inch.

It's hard to say with such a small sample size. If it were me, I would shoot some more groups and see if it happens all the time. Or if it was a possibly just a pulled shot. (not unlikely for me)

Is this by chance that 270 wby mag I heard about? Done any chrono readings yet? That thing should turn 110gr bullets into laser beams...pew pew

It very well could have been a pulled shot but the guy that had it before me said 3 shot .5in groups were pretty common, anything after that started to open up.

Yes, it's the 270wby and I haven't had time to do any reloads yet but I will post up some results as soon as I figure out how fast a 110gr bullet will fly.

Ok gotcha, Another thing to consider... IS the barrel free floated? If so, how much clearance does it have?

I have a rifle that was fre floated, but the clearance from barrel to wood was pretty tight, after a few shots it wasn't fully floated anymore and had a couple contact points between barrel and stock. Taking out a little more wood helped. But then all the rain we have here would actually swell the stock after a couple days hard hunting...So I took a little more wood out and glass bedded full length...then sanded on the glass to free float the barrel again. Now it shoots better than it ever has consistently.

Dunno if any of that will help you or not, but it came to mind.

Oh and those 110gr TSX's might just turn into tracers from flying so fast...lmao

Which barrel profile is that MarkV? That caliber is HOT, and the thin profiles likely will walk around once they get warm. Try 5 rounds, 5 min between them. If your sub .75MOA you know its the heat.

I had the same experience with a light barrel gun. I got the gun cheap because the seller thought as the barrel warmed up, the guns groups opened up. Damn pencil barrel guns! I did like you said and found out this model 70 in 270 Winchester shoots pretty good hot or cold.

Yes the barrel is floated. When I got it someone has epoxied a piece of plastic under the recoil lug to float the barrel. That was the first thing to go. I then sanded out the stock so there was plenty of clearance even when a little pressure is applied to the front. So I should be good there and it's also a synthetic stock so the weather shouldn't effect it much. With the old plastic piece under the recoil lug the action wasn't even making contact with the aluminum bedding block so now with it gone it should be good and solid and I also put a dab of red lock-tite between the two.

I will have to do some more shooting to see what it will do for sure. As far as the 110's go I'd like to try them but not I'm not going to push the velocity to much. It will be interesting to see though.

Not sure about the profile but the end of the barrel measures .584. Next time I go out I will give it more time to cool and since I am now on the paper I won't have to shoot it anymore than just for groups.

Sounds like you have a game plan. Report back after you get a chance to play with the new toy some more.

I am sure you have done so already, but I will say it anyway. Make sure the scope is mounted solid

It doesn't make any noise when I shake it so I should be good to go.
