Default How do you "do" a SBR?

I've got a stripped lower and upper that I would like to make into a short barreled rifle chambered in 6.8. I've heard Form 4 and Form 1 tossed around, but don't have experience with a SBR. I did the Form 4 for my suppressor, but would I be considered the "builder" for a short barreled rifle if I start with just a stripped lower/upper which would require a Form 1, right? It's an Aero Precision upper/lower stamped as "Multi-caliber". What do I need to do besides the photos and fingerprints? Which form do I submit?

You need to do a form 1. Fill it out like you did your form 4 but make sure you list barrel length next to over all length. Then you will need to get the lower engraved with the name, city and state that you put on the form 1. If you need any more help call me at the shop tomorrow and I can answer any questions you have.Eric

Since you have the lower, you submit a form 1 as the "maker" of the SBR. You designate the upper length, caliber, and OAL of the rifle and then you file the form 1 for that rifle. Its really a very easy form to fill out. Once you get the Form 1 stamp, you can put any other upper on that lower that you want, but you should retain the original as listed. You will also need to engrave your name (of trust or LLc if you have one) and city, and state on the lower.

If you ever sell the original upper, you should notify BATFE that you are changing the configuration of the rifle and that there will be another upper listed in the registry, along with your "build," since they need a whole rifle listed.

If you ever travel with the SBR, you must list the exact rifle as its configured on your stamp on the 5320.20 and get it approved before you travel.

For what it's worth, my last form 1 SBR went "pending" on 10/30/2011 and the stamp arrived at my house on 4/30/2011.
