Hi, my name is 68WJ, and I am addicted to .22's, and further complicated by BRD.
I have been wanting a .22 upper for my AR lower and late last week placed an order with Hamlund Tactical for a CMMG model. As usual, it shipped fast and the giant package containing an upper and 2 mags was on my doorstep yesterday. Since the shipping was free, I can't complain about the packaging being oversized and excessively stuffed with paper (I don't think the pic does it justice). Who wants to complain about their new gun part being extra padded anyway?
Lots of padding:
The upper is made in a standard M4 style with forged aluminum receiver, F marked front sight base, A2 flash hider, and carbine handguards. The forward assist is a cosmetic plug and the ejection port cover has been chopped and a larger brass deflector added. The charging handle is plastic and acts as a vertical spacer for the bolt, but only needs pulled back a few inches to charge and does not need to be removed during disassembly. The barrel is WASP treated (CMMG's term for nitrocarburizing) and is made for .22 LR with a 1/16" twist and proper bore diameter. I have already ordered a set of MOE handguards since the heatshield is not held in place well and I can't tolerate the rattle. Yes, it could be glued, but I like the MOE setup.
The bolt assembly is comprised of a frame rail, sliding bolt, and spring assembly. Removal is as easy as breaking over the AR as you normally would, but instead of pulling back the charging handle you pull the bolt assembly tail (the handle does not need to be removed). Done.
It uses a claw extractor and a fixed ejector is part of the frame rail. At the front of the frame rail is a bushing that mates the bolt assembly with the barrel and contains a short feed ramp. Firing is a basic blowback operation and the rifle's normal buffer spring is not used in the action. Overall the metal looks very well machined and smooth. I wiped everything down with Breakfree and lubed the rails with Wilson Combat's grease.
The upper does not come with magazines, but I ordered two 25 rounders (similar to another favorite AR cartridge). These are made by CMMG, but Black Dog also makes a few options. They both fit VERY tight in my lower, but the packaging warns of this and indicates that there are two pressure pads mean to be shaved down to ensure a good fit you YOUR lower. I assume this is because .22 retros can be finicky and a firm seated mag is the best cure.
Mag construction is a solid feeling plastic material with brass sleeves and screws holding everything together. Disassembly is quick and easy with the M36 Mod1 ballpoint pen/magazine disassembly tool.
To add to anyone's BRD, there are accessories for this setup as well. The bolt does not hold open on the last shot, but a bolt hold-open insert in the lower and new magazine followers can resolve this. If you want to use one of the polymer lowers for an ultralight AR .22, you will need their blowback hammer as the OE polymer hammers are too wide.
Range report will be posted when I get to shoot it. I already have several types of ammo to try and am looking forward to decent accuracy.

Nice review 68. I was just able to pick up 500 .22lr for the 15-22 and 280 rds of assorted Fed and Tula 5.56 at Wally World for a plinking day I have scheduled with my grandson who is spending the summer with us. Gotta love BRD and .22lr it was a match made in heaven. Don't forget to let us know how it shoots.
No, no, no...I will not purchase one, I will not purchase one, I will not purchase one...trying to convince myself...

Bad news for all tin cans in a 50mile radius, BRD .22lr !!!!!
Okay, I'll shut up. Some fellas have to keep their tongues flappin' but not me. I was brought up right. My pa used to tell me to shut up and I'd shut up. I wouldn't say nothin'. One time darn near starved to death. WOULDN'T TELL HIM I WAS HUNGRY!!

I got one a few months ago at Palmetto state, put a Troy trx rail on it and claymore muzzle device that I had laying around. A blast to shoot and is a bit more consistant shooter than my son's 15-22. You will enjoy it. I have only used Blackdog mags with mine and only 2 FTF due to the ammo. Never really thought about doing a real range report as it is just a blaster for me and another rifle to start my younger boys on.
You can't fight it. I did for about a year and finally got a CMMG upper like 68WJ, just with railed FSB and without the stainless bolt assembly. It is sooooooo fun and cheap to shoot! It will pay for itself in the first 1000 rounds you shoot (which doesn't take long).

I am going to have to get one of these along with a 5.56 upper.
