Default Advantage of 6.8 over 5.56/223

I'm new to this form. What are the main uses for a 6.8? Mainly hunting?

Welcome. Some good reading on the subject here: http://68forums.com/forums/showthrea...-6.8-SPC-Guide.

Many here will say that the 6.8 makes an AR what it should have been. I guess I am one of them. It is capable of great accuracy from a familiar platform, with more energy on target, and very good (and growing) industry support.

Hunting medium game, it is a great cartridge, if I was allowed to, I would use it as my main duty gun for work. More a$$ than the 5.56!!!

I deal with about 5%-10% of the population 80%-90% of the time...

It was targeted for the .Mil in 2004 but a screwed up chamber made it look different from what we use today. Today's 6.8 is another animal with more power and the ability to run well from short barrels. Most of us still have a 5.56 for blasting or 3 gun but when you need some more power/reach, the 6.8 wins hands down. It along with the 6.5G/.264 offer the most out of a AR15.

The 6.8 upper will work fine with the 5.56 lower, you need a dedicated 6.8 magazine. Stag, Armalite, Bison, AR15 Performance, and there are others...

Only thing the 5.56 has over the 6.8 is ammo cost is lower. But 5.56 dedicated real hunting ammo is about the same as the 6.8 in cost. For Models...check out the vendors here and depends what you want to spend. You can get a great shooting 6.8 for cheaper one can think. Some buy out right but I followed advice. I did a "Build" that was a complete upper (cheaper than building from scratch for me) and a complete lower. I got an ARP for greater range and performance to compliment my Mini 6.8 I use for grunt stuff.

I would definately buy from one of our sponsoring vendors here. Their offerings have the right specs for this caliber, they're actively involved here (listen to/interact with the buying public here), and they have very good track records for any follow-up service which may be needed. Load development help is also imparted from time to time too.

I opted to buy mine from AR Performance, each one has a loyal following of people who've bought from them.

ARP should be starting to build rifles soon. Check out his site.
Next time you go to the range make some money. Just catch or retrieve your 6.8 brass and sell it.
