    Default Right shellholder for Brass

Ok I know that this might have been discussed before but don't beat the newbie up for asking. I went to Cabelas and ordered a RCBS shellholder #19. It came I was able to use it to reload some new Horandy brass and it seemed that the maybe the RCBS is set up for Remington large primer brass. Is the right shell holder for Horandy and SSA brass a Horandy #12? Did I miss something or what should I have looked at? Thanks for insight to the issue that I notice.

I use rcbs shell holders for all my 6.8 brass and haven't seen any issues. What's your concern with them? How is it set for lrp.
Next time you go to the range make some money. Just catch or retrieve your 6.8 brass and sell it.

you will be OK. The hole in the shell holder for the most part is the same size or will handle the large and small primers. I use a RCBS #19 and it works with both. The Redding #5 has a larger hole? I guess that's just the way they make it. I also use a #27 extended shell holder for a 40 S&W to seat 6.8 in a RCBS competition die with a 270 bushing and seat stem.

Thanks Guys I used a RCBS hand primer most of the time any more and like I said first set of loads just shift primer to the center and prime ok. I did try the trick with the 40 S&W shellholder but some of the Horandy case wouldn't fit and didn't want to force them so... I figured that I would ask and see what other did. What is the preferred brass--What give the best life as far as loads and works well?

For the RCBS hand primer there are two plastic pieces that hold the shell holder. white for the small primers and black for the large primers. There is also a small pin and large pin that you also use. small pin = white, large pin = black and there is a flat end and rounded end. The rounded end goes into the body and the flat end does the priming. You should not have to center anything. Also the older shell holders will not fit the hand primer. The bevel on the bottom of the shell holder is not large enough.

SSA brass is the best for many reloads. But if the dies are not set up right brass life will be short or if you use small base dies. Do you have a tool to measure the bump on the shoulder when you resize. A .004 bump is about all you want. pushing the shoulder down more than that will over work the brass and shorten case life.

In addition to Coondog on the primer

He is correct on that model, I have 2 of them. I ALSO have the RCBS Universal model (no shellholders required). It also has separate small and large pins for appropriate size primers. This model the primer may shift a bit with small primers since there is no plastic guide. I just jiggle it a bit and squeeze the handle to lift the primer a bit then slip the brass into the universal holder. Still prefer this model to having to change shellholders in the other model. I dedicate the other 2 I have to most often loaded dedicated calibers with extra shellholders.
