Default A good night scope at a good value

It appears that here in NC we will be able to hunt feral hogs and coyotes after July at night. YEA! About time. Now I will be looking for a IR scope what works. I have shot once a ATN that seemed like forever to lock in. Bounced all over till cross hairs turned red. Terrible. With out spending 2gs what would you all recommend. If money was no object I would go therma. Since I do not want to,second mortgage my house I am listening Thanks!

Do yourself a favor and use military -grade NV gear, not ATN. You will be glad you saved for the best. If possible, get Gen 3. If not, then look at the M845, which is made by L3, has an all-metal housing, and is a great value for the money. Its also got a red-dot for its reticle, which is really useful for fast shooting.

Your first NV should probably be a PVS-14, so look at the Pinnacle Night Enforcer, made by ITT, and with a full 5 year warranty. It will last many years, even with hard use, and no matter what NV you buy ion the future, you would eventually want a PVS-14.

    Hope that helps

I'm thinking the hogs around here can feel quite safe after dark having perused the prices on the units HTR recommends. Ouchie!
"You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream -- the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path." -- Ronald Reagan

You must not have been researching NV for very long

There are several tiers in NVD's:

    1) the roller skate: IOW, the Gen 1 stuff. If your traveling, not even worth your time.

    2) the tricycle: IOW, the Gen 2 stuff. It will get you there but your speed's limited, and you're gonna be fatigued.

    3) the Yugo: sure its a car, but would you really drive one if you could afford anything better? This is the ATN of the car world.

    4) the Gen 3's. Sure, you can still pick among the Chevy's, Ford's and Cadillacs, but they are all >>>>>>> Yugo.

I have used the M845, but I don't own one. It can be bought for just under $2000. Did you know that most Schmidt & bender scopes are > $2200? A Brand New Zeiss or Swaro is > $2000. This is high quality Gen2 Super High performance NV for < $2000.

Its one of the best values out there. You can also get a blem PVS-14 or perhaps even used PVS-14 for around $2500-2750.

This ^^^^^^ is both entertaining and informative. Lots of good info wrapped in a funny metaphor.

I do like the M845 can I use behind my 4x AGOG you are right the PVS-14 is the sh--t but a bit pricey the ITT is in same price point and some said it did not do well with rifle recoil. expecially in bigger calibers
    My Leupold Mark 4 8.5 x 25 x 50 was still cheaper.

I second the M845 as being the lowest priced unit worth spending money on. You'd be better off with a red light than a Gen1. Stay away from ATN anything.

There is the digital night vision by pulsar. Its about $1200-1500. At the gun show this weekend the same people quoted 3 different prices, $1299 being the cheapest. You can record your hunts with it also.
