    Default MMI Trutec

The plan was to get an ARP 16 incher, but patience is not one of my virtues. So now I'm about to order a Wilson Combat Recon barrel and have it Melonited by MMI. I already spoke to Rodney about 4 or 5 times with various questions in the span of 30 minutes. He was very kind and didnt seem annoyed by my constant calling. I was just wondering if anyone has dealt with him or MMI.

There were two melonite treatments mentioned on the website and I asked him what was the difference, but nevermind that. He said that MMI was putting out a high volume of barrels for major companies, and I asked him if my single barrel would recieve the same treatment and he confirmed it would.

Any info or reviews would be appreciated.

I don't think ARP will have the Melonite barrels in stock any time soon. I talked to Rodney and he said it would take a 2 week turn around time at the most. I suggest you purchase the best barrel you can. Bison...Wilson...WOA...BHW...Get your desired barrel and send it to him. I really doubt you'll be disappointed.

Are you asking and then answering yourself?

Also how can you say you wont be disappointed if you are asking for reviews in your first post and you havent actually finished any deals or received any services from him yet?

I sent Rodney/MMI two custom "franken" 1911's (Foster Ind. carbon steel frames, Colt and Kimber stainless slides and barrels, and a mix of SS and CS internals, less springs) and I was pleased with the results. The finish is excellent and they function superbly. Accuracy is also excellent.

A friend of mine sent a rifle barrel to him and its finish was also very nice. My friend has had no issues that I am aware of reliability or accuracy wise.

NOTE: You will need to SCRUB the bore to remove the remnants of the Melonite treatment. By scrub, I mean JB the bore vigorously before your normal cleaning procedure. Several patches of JB will result in nearly black patches. I did this to my pistol barrels and my friends rifle barrel. My research on the process indicated that removal of this residue was imperative if accuracy was important without having to fire dozens, if not hundreds, of rounds.

I guess I am. I'll be sure to post a report and review of the finished product. But if they are doing large batches then I would think they would have the procedure perfected.

Thanks for the reply. I hope my barrel turns out as good. Hopefully velocity will be increased from the meloniting.

Grunts with superiority complexes make me laugh, especially since 90% of them didnt score high enough for anything else besides open contract. If you were my boot you'd be thoroughly hazed.
If you decide to get it done, dont get paranoid over the rust colored material on your patches, it made me paranoid at first till I realized it was just the solution.

I wonder if the barrel extension will loosen after said treatment. hmmm? If so after tightening to spec will the pre drilled gas port be out of alignment with the alignment pin?

I would do it if I were you because it could be next year before I get more barrels, we have the move coming up sometime this summer and all.

    300 AAC Blackout Chambering Cancelled:

Some time ago, Savage announced it would be chambering the Model 10 Precision Carbine in 300 AAC Blackout. Since that time, we have tested many variants of this cartridge in various barrel lengths and rates of twist. This exhaustive testing left us quite unsatisfied with the accuracy we were able to get from the subsonic loads in this chambering. Accuracy with the lighter, faster loads in this caliber was actually quite good. But we believe the real value in this cartridge lies in the use of subsonic loads for suppressed rifles. Therefore we have decided to scrap the project.
It is our understanding that pushing these heavy, slow bullets presents challenges not found in typical loadings and that our experience is not unique. Subsequently, many in the industry have simply adopted a lower standard for accuracy for these subsonic loads. While this does seem reasonable and we don't criticize any in our industry that have taken this approach, it just won't work for Savage.
Our brand was built on accuracy and we are too protective of our reputation for building the most accurate factory rifles available. We would rather walk away from this opportunity than sell a product that requires an explanation.
