SBR has .338 Spectre barrels in stock. I want to build one...I need to get my .308 done first. It looks like the .338 Spectre uses a pistol length gas system even on their 16inch barrels.
I would love to put one together and run it...

I have a stripped upper sitting on my desk waiting to be built into something. It is already painted to match the lower. I am having a hard time picking. Paart of me wants a 12.5" 6.8 and part of me wants a 10.5" Spectre with a 9mm can on it.
30HRT, what a 300BO wants to be when it grows up!
Building is pretty easy, its all pistol length gas becuase "technically" the 338 Spectre is designed to be used at pistol pressures, and since it was designed for suppressed use it makes it easy to run right with the pistol gas length.

In my mind the Spectre is what the .300 Whisper/BO wants to be when it grows up. SBR is the only maker I know for sure but with the Wilson deal worked out with the .458 SOCOM dare we wish for Bill to hook up with Marty to produce the .338 Spectre down the road? You can make the brass out of 6.8 brass if you do not mind reaming, or wait until Starline runs a batch of 10mm magnum brass. Then a quick trip through the sizing die is all it takes. The hardest part is getting dies, CH-4D is the only one I know of, but if Wilson could be persuaded to do the .338S I am sure he would get Hornady to make a run like he did the 7.62 x 40 WT. I fail to understand the infatuation with the .300 BO since it is really nothing more than a better marketed .300 Whisper. Now the Spectre, that's another story. Subsonic it is not even in the same league as the BO, leaving it behind to eat its dust, 180 or 300 gr.? Not even close. While the BO can get higher velocities with lighter bullets, 1800-2000 fps with a 165 gr. bullet is nothing to be sneezed at. While the BO Can get 2400 fps with 110-115 gr bullets, when it jumps up to 135 gr. bullets it is already down to 2100 fps and when you get up to 150-165 gr. bullets it can only muster about 1600-1800 fps, and forget about tossing 300 gr. pill at any speed.
If the .300 fanboys would put their pride aside and take an honest look at the Spectre they would be begging Marty to get Wilson to start turning out barrels because it sure looks like SBR has more than they can handle right now.

Interesting.
I believe that Paladin Machine Services is actually making the Teppo Jutsu barrels. I wonder if his three position gas block also works. I have one of Paladin's 300 BO barrels and switchblock. Works beautifully. Only problem was getting a gas tube.
Paladin does all of my barrel threading ... he does a superb job at a very reasonable price with very little delay!

I have been researching this cartridge for a while also. I beleive the subsonic stuff is designed for around 36,000 psi (?) thus the 10mm brass. If you want to shoot hot supersonic it was recommended to form from 6.8 brass for 58,000 psi? The multipoistion gas block would seem to back that up. Good info on the Paladin folks, headed there now. Thanks
Just checked w Paladin. Teppo Jutsu is on hiatus. SBR now owns the rights to the .338 Spectre. Barrels will only be available through them or with their permission. Is the problem with a proprietary cartridge.
Would be an interesting cartridge for hog hunting. I suspect that the 300 BLK is adequate for closed space CQB and is certainly more available.
That was the case for the .458 SOCOM too for a long time. But, and I am not speaking for anyone or doing anything other than thinking out loud, IF there were enough interest in the Spectre, enough for Wilson to want to also take on the chambering, then MAYBE Wilson could get with Marty-the ultimate owner of the Spectre as with the SOCOM-and work out a deal just as they did with the SOCOM. Maybe it could happen, maybe not.
Paladin does great work there is no question about that. And I am sure he would not mind the extra business IF he could legally do it. All it takes is enough interest for people to want to go through the trouble to obtain the permission to do it. Marty came up with some great rounds and it is a crying shame that two are now dead and the .338 S is only in the hands of SBR, at least for now. But the .458S has taken off and with several companies now producing the .458 SOCOM, once the infatuation with the Whisper/B.O. wears thin there may be a clamoring for the Spectre and more people may come on line with it, at least I hope so anyway.
