Thread: 9th Company

    Default 9th Company

Last week, I watched a Russian movie on Netflix, which was released in 2005 titled "9th Company". It was an interesting movie, which was not flattering to the Soviet Red Army experience during the Afghan occupation in the 80's. I am not going to go into further details and be a spoiler. Apparently this movie was produced with independent script writing and directing instead of the usual government "influence" I had seen on several other Russian movies.

Has anyone here who have done tour of duty in Afghan seen this movie? if you did, do you see anything you can draw a parallel with our "experiences"?

Here's the Wiki writeup on the movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_9th_Company

Another movie that was recently on TV is " The Beast". IMO, it depicts the Soviet military in the same way Oliver Stone depicts the US military.

I saw it and thought it was decent. Other than the environment I can't really compare it to my experience there because I was usually flying over it.

Popular movie in tank units (at least mine). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094716/
Out of commission, become a pillbox. Out of ammo, become a bunker. Out of time, become heroes.
Never went to AFG so can't comment.

Probably in all tank units. I -- and other former tankers I've talked to -- thoroughly enjoyed The Beast.

Another, very well done, Russian war movie (a four-part, TV mini-series, actually) is Grozovye Vorota. Can be seen on youtube:

In the last mountain top battle, the Mujabs launched assault wave, which so much resembled Napoleonic war tactic where they all lined up and calmly WALKED into Russian fire. That part did not resemble anything of real life combat at all. If they launched an assault like that, it would take at the least a 100:1 ratio to be able to reach the paratroops trenches. One particular Mujab wore dark hip sunglasses. That character was way out of character for a battle scene.

The paratroop BDU is quite nice, I wonder how authentic it is. I like their boonie hat. It appears to offer better sun protection than our boonie hat.

I'm sure you're right. They are in no hurry to die. You can find videos on youtube of real Taliban attacks. Here's one:

Not on youtube. Amazon.com used to sell a DVD w/subtitles, but I don't know if it's still available or not.
