Default Range reports/accuracy of SBR 6.8 builds?

I'm just about set on a 6.8 SBR since it preforms so well out of short bbls. I think a 10.5" is going to be my goal but that limits me to the Noveske and that bad boy is expensive. My other options are having a ARP/Bison cut down/threaded or go with the 11.3" Wilson. I have a shop that does cheap cutting/threading so no problem there.

I plan to add some kind of comp like Clint's BRT so that is where the shorter bbl is taking priority, the shorter the better. Don't want to go with a 7.5" though. IMO, after adding a comp to a 12.5", it is just about 14" and I got a 16" ARP already with a thread protector for hunting. The SBR will be a SHTF/Target gun since we can't use them for hunting.

    Am I crazy??

Out of curiosity, what state do you live in that doesn't allow hunting with an SBR?

I can't really help with your question because both my SBRs are in pistol form while I wait for my stamp.

As for barrels, you can also add Blackhole Weaponry to the list of places you can get a barrel in your desired length (even if it may not be listed on their website).

I'm in NC. As far as I've read, no type of NFA item can be used to take game. If someone knows different, I'd love to use a short 6.8.

I'll check out BHW, I know they make good stuff. thanks

I just read through the NC Hunting Regulation Digest and there is nothing that says SBRs are illegal for hunting game animals. They do say suppressors are illegal, but nothing about SBRs. Pages 40, 42, 62, and 72 list the restrictions and the only thing that talks about barrel length is on page 62 and is talking about pistols.

You'll probably want to double check (I know I would), but there is nothing in these published regulations preventing the use of an SBR to take a game or non-game animal. Here's the link the the PDF of the regs: http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/...RegsDigest.pdf

I hope that makes your decision easier. Now you just have to get your state to allow the use of suppressors for hunting.

You are correct, thanks for the info/help. The website has more posted than in my paperback book. I asked the guys over at CSF and got the same reply. Looks like I'm going to be $400 deep in tax stamps this time.

+1 on the suppressed hunting. I'd love to sit in the stand and take out the squirrels that steal my deer corn. CCI subs in the 10/22 with the can is stupid quite.

Well, looks like NC doesn't allow hunting with a SBR due to the fact it is considered a "mass weapon of destruction". If any NC-ers wants to check it out: http://mobile.ncleg.net/EnactedLegis...S_14-288.8.pdf

I still might build one, sure was looking forward to using it on some deer.

I read that countless times and I don't see how you get that it bans the use of SBRs for hunting. If anything, it almost looks like it bans ownership, etc. of SBRs but it gives some wiggle room in the latter sections. I'd call NC Wildlife Resources and get a clear answer.

It looks misleading but I'm not ready to be in the middle of that fine line, lol. I'd cry like a baby if my rig were taken. I'm going to call the resources center and see what the deal is.

Heck no... I looked at my build spreadsheet for the two suppressors, two SBRs, and night vision setup and nearly choked when I saw how much that added up to be. I'd be in a world of hurt if someone confiscated my stuff. Not to mention I'd also probably be in Federal prison and I'm too purty to go to prison!

I'd love to hear what you find out. The nature of my job requires me to be able to read and understand contracts and complex legal language so as I read through what you posted, it looks like you have to complete your form 1 for "Research and Development" as the reason for building an SBR.

Aside from that, I didn't see anything in that statute or the wildlife regs that says you can't use a weapon of mass destruction or a SBR for hunting wildlife. I think the SBR would fall into the "Sporting Purposes" comment of the statute which is at the bottom of page 2.

But, I am definitely not a lawyer and I would definitely spend the $100-$200 to get a lawyer to make sure you're covered before applying for an SBR.

Well I heard back from the Major of Field Ops and he gave me the go. As long as I can legally possess the rifle, it can be used to hunt. Even with his word the law still sounds like a 2 way street.

I'm going to make my mind up and build one. I have printed off a copy of our comms and will keep it with the SBR's F4 copy, incase questions arise.
