I suspect that the problem is that the round never was very popular. Not to say it is not a good round just that it did not succeed.
We've got all these hot new, fancy, schmancy AR rounds out there that it got me to thinking... why not an AR-10 in .358 Winchester? It's based on the .308 and there is a little better selection of pointy .358 caliber bullets out there. I'm thinking of the 225gr Accubond here. Has someone tried it? It think it'd be cooler than a 338 Federal or even the .458 SOCOM. At least it has the potential to be. Thoughts?......Go

Unfortunately for the 358 it was developed in the mid fifties, right about the time "magnum mania" started. The shooting public was instucted by gun rag scribes that they only wanted overbore belted magnums. So a good cartridge sort of fell by the wayside.
I think there would be good reasons to chamber an AR 10 in 358. The main one being it doesn't need a long barrel to develop full power. The downside is that it would be custom chambering, i.e. cost would increase over a more common round.
A lightweight AR-10 in .358 Win. would be a great rifle for big/heavy game within 200 yards.
I would think that it would make a nice carbine AR10

hhhmmmmmm! now i am thinking! this would be the oddball nobody else has. i like it!
too many projects not enough money
I can't stop thinking about it myself. I'm thinking a 20 in plain, target crowned barrel. Or maybe a can adapter. And after looking at loads from Double Tap it looks even more interesting. Would standard mags work or would we have to start from scratch? Hmmmmmm indeed.
From what I can see from reloading manuals the .308 and .358 cases are the same until the shoulder hits the neck. It of course is then larger due to the larger diameter bullet. Depending on the front of the mag in the feed lip area the mag could just work.

Interesting article. I've never owned a 358 Winchester, now I have to think about it. I also wonder how a shortened 358 would work in the AR15 platform utilizing your big bolt..
The article also explained why my 6 Lb. #3 Ruger in 45-70 kicks so much. I didn't realize it was generating over 36 foot-pounds with my handloads.
