Default Ever hear the original version of Taps?

Here is Taps played in its entirety. The Original version of Taps was called Last Post, and was written by Daniel Butterfield in 1801. It was rather lengthy and formal, as you will hear in this clip, so in 1862 it was shortened to 24 notes and re-named Taps.

Never heard the orginal/full version. Beautifully done too ! Many moons ago, I played Taps (graveside, off in the distance) for a WWII vet who'd finished a long life post-war. Played taps grave-side on one other occasion... never an easy thing, especially when you knew the person.

The ol' lip AIN'T what it used to be !!! LOL. Dragged my ol' trumpet out about a year ago and struggled through one octave. Back in the day, I could play in three octaves. LOL

That young lady does the horn justice. Good find, and thanks for postin' it up !

It's amazing that there is so much confusion on how even something like this - which always brings goose bumps to me and honestly a tear to my eye when played - came to be. RD, I to have played this a few times for people I knew who had died in service. It was pretty darned hard to do it with tears, snot bubbling .....and very strong emotions all at the same time. All the same - that was a beautiful rendition.

Thanks for posting this! I'm gonna go wipe my eyes now.

Thanks and I'd never heard the full version... Very talented young lady, and yes, that's an eerily beautiful, yet haunting song and she nailed it.

Been to many .mil funerals, a few LEO funerals, other remembrances, "Silver Taps" @ Texas A&M along with an entire USAF career behind me... Personally, it's very hard to not shed a tear or two when our version of Taps is played correctly, meaningfully and from the soul.

Always good to know some more history and God Bless all of you!

FWIW, I can't imagine being a bugler @ a service, much less for somebody that was a close friend...

I had the privilege to be posted to duty in Arlington back in the 70's and only heard it played in it's entirety twice at full honors funerals. Both long and short versions still choke me up. To hear it echoing over the hills and stones of Arlington is a thing of devastating beauty. Thanks for posting it
