if you practice at 300 yards all of the time insteead of the 50 or 100 yards most people do you can learn to extend your range by a long ways this goes for bow hunting and all types of hunting i am very confident with my handloaded accubonds at 450yds with my stag model 7 hunter

I shoot NRA High Power up to 600 yards (with open sights only) so distance doesn't matter too much to me. The initial question was regarding the killing power of the shot upon impact with the 6.8. I really doubt that the 6.8 can provide an effective kill shot beyond 300 yards with a medium size animal even with a perfect shot. I think Stag's assertion at 600 yards is total "hogwash" (pun was intentional").

That's severely pushing things even with a high powered rifle like 30-06, or 300 WinMag, and just plain irresponsible for a barely medium class cartridge like 6.8. It takes an exceptional rifleman to make accurate, one shot kills at that kind of range with a bolt rifle; it is even harder with an AR because of the shorter barrel, and less powerful rounds.

I've got a good scope on my 6.8 that is calibrated so that I can aim at targets at 500 yards, but I wouldn't even consider shooting at live game at that range, let alone 600 yards.

Excellent point. I used to shoot Metallic Silhouette with a 7mm-08. 500 meters is looong way to shoot at anything, but you can learn to do it. What sets guys like us apart from the average shooter, however, is that we practice and use equipment that is more or less specialized for the type of shooting. The typical hunter only shoots a couple boxes a year, if that. I got to be pretty good at 500 meters with my heavy barrel Remington 700, and I shot 1000 yard highpower with the same rifle. Wasn't worth a crap at that range though, so I gave up the high power shooting.

Btw, you're being too nice with the 'hogwash' thing. It is more like Total BS.
