Default 12 inch pistol barrel....enough speed for ttsx's?

    Hello to all,

I am very new at the 6.8 thing but after getting an AR I developed a deep like for the caliber. I decided it would be a great pistol caliber for deer. I had a 12 inch barrel custom made for my Encore and have found it to be a great shooter. I took a nice deer with the AR but then made what I thought was a good shot on a second deer with the pistol only to loose it. How much speed is needed to open a 110 TTSX?

I believe Barnes says that the TTSX opens up at 2100 FPS, but if I were you, I would use the 85 grain TSX in that barrel. Believe it or not, the 85 grain TSX is said to open at around 1900 FPS, but its real advantage is that you can get it so near that magic 3000 FPS mark.

These bullets need speed to perform and the TSX can be driven to 2900 out of the 12" barrel. When using the Barnes bullets, don't get hung up on bullet weight, but focus on driving them as fast as you can.

I think I flipped them around. You would expect the 110 to open at a lower speed, since the cavity is 4X bigger than the TSX...

Yeah Barnes told me 2000 for the ttsx and 2100 for the tsx... I didnt ask abotu different grains.... I guess the 110 could open at 1900 and the 85 at 2100 but I dont know for sure..... I really need to get that gel midway sells and start doing tests.....

Right, the 68 spreadsheet says min expansion vel is:
    2100 for 85 TSX
    1900 for 110 TSX

That 2900 fps MV out of a 12" bbl is almost unbelievably good performance from a short bbl.
By comparison, the 70 gr TSX in 5.56 gets "only" 2730 fps from a 16" bbl.

The chart also says at 2900, the max performance / expansion range is 232 yards.
