Hi all. Very few search results on low mass carriers. Who is running one?
Going to build my new 6.8 w 16" arp scout barrel & bolt w JP low mass carrier, mid length gas and adjustable block. I also have the JP silent captured buffer spring w spring pack(of various weights). Goal is light weight and (hopefully) lighter recoil, and to function with a variety of loads-- factory and hand.
I feel confident rifle can be setup and tuned well, but question is reliability. I read one post claiming light weight carrier is not recommended. True? and why?
This is a sporting/hunting rifle so not concerned about life-staking reliability, but of course don't like broken parts.
Recommendations on spring weights?
Thanks.
Its like the timing on a car once set right you dont really gotta mess with it. You have picked out the appropriate components to run the rifle, provided they are adjustable enough, so there shouldn't be any issues. I say save your money and buy a standard carrier and put the difference into ammo.
Lightweight carriers are built for competition use for the reasons you mentioned. As long as you you tune your rifle to your ammo and function test for reliability you will be GTG. Carrier and buffer assembly weights can be tailored to certain shooting styles, as can gas ports. From pure speculation the sizes of gas ports and weights of carriers/buffers in military spec rifles are designed to run with anything you throw at it, while a competition gun may be a little more finicky. What you gain in reduced recoil, you may give up in ammo sensitivity. This is why I tell everyone, if your serious about shooting, you really need to load for that particular caliber. Then you can always tailor your load to your rifle.

Ronin: Check the discussions at the rifle technical section of brianenos dot com for more info about JP's low mass configuration. Those 3-gunners shoot 5.56 rather than 6.8, but they have definite opinions about the pros and cons of this set up. Their objective is speed - split times, double taps, etc. For hunting its first shot placement that counts most. After researching the subject, you may find the JP low mass set up is more trouble than its worth, even some of the 3-gunners feel that way. - CW
Low mass carrier, carbine buffer, standard/or tuned spring, 16" arp scout.
I have a pri adjustable gas block and I am curious if there's a better one. does anybody male an adjustable gas block that will hold its place with some kind of 'click n lock' set-up?
I have one of these, but it leaks through the set screw. It does not loose adjustment, but I could not tell the difference as I made adjustments. I also don't see how it can't leak around the threads. Maybe I did something wrong.
it just works... the instructions say crank it all the way closed, then back off 3 full turns. put 1 round at a time in magazine, if bolt does not lock open, keep backing off one click at a time until it does. good to go. the pamphlet suggests dialing it in on a dry gun, i also used the lightest load i'm likely to shoot out of my rifle. 300+ rounds through it, no problems. i was using an h2 and heavy spring, when i put the adjustable on i went back to a carbine spring/buffer and there's definitely less felt recoil
i would think if it's leaking around the adjustment screw there's probably a defect somewhere.
You kind of have to tie t&e entire system together.
It is more for competition. It involves the buffer, carrier, spring, and adjustable gas block.
All three together will get it tuned.
I am setting up my current 5.56 and about to build a .308 for heavy metal division with this system.
I use the jp silent captured spring and a syrac adj gb on my 6.8 and 308....i use the heaviest spring JP has and a ym nm carrier.....on larger calibers the stronger jpscs can quicken the recoil impulse, obviously there is a balance because the more spring resistance the further the gb has to be open.....its a trial and error thing and since everyones perception is different its subjective. I shoot mostly spc II loads.......Buy the spring kit and see what feels best for you.
I've run a JP LMOS carrier in a .308 AR, along with the silent capture spring and a Seekins adjustable gas block. For my 6.8 build, I decided it wasn't worth it. As with the .308 I'm building a pretty light rifle but recoil *shouldn't* be as much of an issue with 6.8. I'd rather put the extra $200 I saved towards handloading components.
Note: Being new to this chambering, I welcome any corrections to assumptions I'm making!
