View Full Version : Ammo for Whitetail...

I'm the proud owner for a new 6.8 upper for my AR-15 that I will be using for whitetail deer season here in WI. Now that I know I have an upper coming I'm on the hunt for factory ammo. I seems as if I can't go wrong with 110g Pro Hunter, however, it doesn't seem to be readily available (is anything?).
I have a 18" Bison barrel, could see shots out to 200 yards, but really it's more likely to be in the 10-50 yards in the woods, sometimes in briar bushes. We do some rumbling through some thick stuff to try to push deer if we don't see anything the morning of opening weekend.
So, I'm looking for a next best option if I can't find any ProHunter.
Thanks!

SSA is on back order until close to when I need the ammo... I'll do a search for Palmetto... thanks, that was fast!!!

Can you load your own? I know Cabelas in Richfield had the components to do it as of last week, I haven't checked if they have loaded ammo recently.

Cabelas carries them. the one here had 85 Barnes and 115 otm.(115 otm not recommended for deer) So they should carry some there as well. Palmetto is a site sponser here so you dont have to search far. You could get the Accubond from SSA as that is a good deer round also.

From what i understand.... 85 Barnes TSX is atually quite suitable to shoot whitetail with... i think i'm going to try and shoot my first buck with a 6.8 this year, and thinking of using the 85 TSX....
Now will the Tactical Load be too much?

That was referened to the 115 smk not the Barnes. Sorry for the confusion.
I just killed two very large deer this week with the 85 grain SSA tactical load and it hit like a freight train.
If you could get that load in time I would highly recommend it. And as I understand it, there is no lead in that projectile, and less lead in your meat is a good plan I think.

I don't have the capability to reload as of yet. I'm piecing together a Dillon XL650 and needed accessories, but the 6.8 upper set that project back a little.

The two Cabela's closest by me only have the 115g OTM, maybe I can see if they can order the 85g TSX.
I see that people are having success with the 85g bullets, I just need to get it out of my head that I don't need big bullets to take down a deer (I've hunted with 165-180g 30-06 all of my life). It's hard to do when it's all you've heard all your life... :a43:

I don't think I'll be helpful in any type of dancing competition... some autocross or track racing and I'll be helpful. =)

I'm in Racine, which is just south of Milwaukee... so it would be a hike from MN... very nice of you to offer though, if I can't find any would you be willing to ship? I would pay for it obviously...

Mugenlude, If you can't find any before deer season, let me know. I'll be going to MN nest week, and I should be back by Nov 15, I can set you up with enough to get through deer season.

WOW, thanks... people on this forum are stand-up!!! November 15th will be the last day I would be able to sight in the rifle, but I don't image it would take long. I can do break-in and such with other ammo, then just tweak my POI with the PH's.

via UPS seems to be the way... here is some shipping information I found on AR15.
United Parcel Service (UPS):
1. Pack ammo within a sturdy cardboard box, gross weight limit of 66 pounds.
2. Print ORM-D label, cut out and tape to a least one side of box. (others have just written ORM-D on the box and put a square around it)
3. Take package to a UPS Customer Center (http://www.ups.com/dropoff?loc=en_US) only - NOT at Drop-Off Box, The UPS Store, Mail Boxes etc., Sonic. Might be a good idea to have the UPS Hazardous Material Support Center number with you -- 800-554-9964. Varied success with UPS pick-up at your location.
Per UPS:
UPS accepts domestic ground shipments of ammunition that have been classified by the shipper as "Cartridges, small arms", "ORM-D" (Other Regulated Material). The package must be properly marked according to the requirements of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR). Contact the Hazardous Material Support Center at 800-554-9964 for details on regulatory information.

There is also a minimum crush weight on the box but I can't remember what it is. It can't just be any box. Same with fedex.

Well, I can't find any local and the Cabela's can't assure me that the 85g TSX they would order would be here in time. I found some other items that I need on Palmetto and they have the ProHunter, 85 TSX and 110 TSX in stock, so I'm going to order some...
I'm going to order 2 boxes of PH and 2 85g TSX... I'm undecided on which round I want to use to hunt, but I don't think it will matter... they both seem like they are great rounds. All of the past posts suggested the PH, but now the 85 TSX seems to be picking up steam!

Try them both and see which one your rifle likes. That's what it all boils down to anyway.

110 Nosler accubonds are also good to go with. SSA has 110 grain nosler accubonds in Tac Loads. I'm sure your bison can handle that if its not standard SAMMI.
My Mini 6.8 can't/shouldn't use those...yet...*waits till life settles down to get on the PU's pull through reamer list!*

I'm planning on using a 110 tsx this weekend. At the range I'll be shooting, the bullet won't have time to drop below 2200 fps.

Rarely seem to see Rem 115gr Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded PSP's recommended. I would think they would work reasonably well on whitetail.

Except for the $35 per 20 ammo at the local fun shop, I don't think I've ever seen the bullets in person. I might have to try some, Midway has them in stock now.

I shot some of the loaded ammo, as you can guess since it is remington it was VERY slow..... and not very accurate.

Mugenlude,
Try Badger Guns and Ammo or The Shooters Shop for the 110GR PH. Both are in the West Allis area and they may have them in stock, or at least for future reference.
Sorry for the delay in replying, work has been insane.
My daughter shot her first doe during the youth hunt three weeks ago using Hornady 110gr V-Max. Not my first choice by any means, but my order of 110gr PH (bullets and factory loads) were back ordered. In any event, the bullet did it's job. The bottom third of the heart was severed clean.

jackh - Yeah the SSA Sierra ProHunters are good-to-go for deer.
onmyown - thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to give them a call if I need more. I ended up ordering them from Palmetto, they had them instock... I just ordered enough that shipping wasn't an issue, and no tax. =)

It seems as if Pro Hunters were the recommended round in the past, but recently guys (particularly HTR) has been using TSX (85 grain recently) and is having great success. As HTR has said in the past, any of there 3 rounds should be just fine for deer, so if you already have some use them.
I ended up purchasing a couple boxes of both 85 TSX and 110 Pro Hunters, I'm going to head to the range and see which piece of ammo shoots better out of my rifle and use that round.

I'm in.
Texas still has us in numbers, but we are catching up.
I have my gun loaded down with the Barnes 85gr TSX(hand load with RE7) for deer hunting, they shoot like lighting and were MOA or better so I'm going to use them.
I have lots of bullets to try though, I have worked up a couple loads withe the 110gr Accubonds(got 250 of these to work with).
I have 150 110gr TTSX I haven't even loaded a round of yet, and I also have 100 110gr TSX that I haven't worked any loads for.
I did work up a load for my .223 with 70gr TSX using 23gr of H4895 that was very accurate and should be close to 2,800+ FPS. It's not much lighter than the 85gr TSX and I was thinking about hunting with it as well.
The 200 62gr TSX's I have will just have to wait till I can find time for them as well but I think they would do the job also at almost 3K FPS.
