Hello all, I have never used a precision triggers before. I have shot 2 stage triggers and do not care to use them. I did look at the Geissele but it is a 2 stage. On another thread jboyette provided a link to some good research on triggers at snipers hide. One interesting thing I read about the Timney was to use the AR10 trigger, only avail in 4lb pull, if you are using mil grade ammo(does this mean SSA ammo, I read elsewhere they had hard primers. I personally don't know).

Also, I get confused about which pull weight to use. Like I said I have put finger to 2 stage triggers but in single stage I have only used the stock trigger weight. That could be anything from what I read in different threads. Some are stiffer than others. I have no way to measure trigger pull. For hunting is a 3lb pull to light, would a 4lb be to heavy? Other than 16oz (1lb) how much difference does a pound make? I have never shot a high round count of rifle rounds in a day, so my target shooting would be light. Unless I get addicted to the 6.8.

I have read about Chip McCormick, JP and Timney, is it just personal preference or is one better than the other. Right now I have SSS trigger and hammer springs in my lower. I am waiting for my upper to arrive.

To be concise: 3 or 4 lb single stage, CMC, JP or Timney.

Any help or more confusion would be nice. Thank you, spoon

I haven't used a Timney in an AR, but I installed one in my Ruger bolt action and love it. The Ruger came with a pretty heavy trigger pull and that Timney set to 3lbs is a sweet shooter. It really helps with getting a clean break.

I built a lower for a 300 Whisper upper that I have and I put a 3lb Jard trigger in it. I like the 3lb for hunting or target shooting. If it was for home defense or duty, etc, I might go more towards the 4lb.

Just to give you a comparison, my factory Bushmaster trigger breaks at just under 8lbs. If that is the trigger weight you are used to, a 3 or 4lb is going to seem much lighter.

Spoon,
In choosing a trigger and what pound trigger pull you want is going to depend on what kind of shooting you plan on doing, whether it's Home Defense, Hunting, Bench-rest or whatever. This can be difficult, because you really can't go to your local gun shop/shooting club and test/shoot each and every trigger. :x BOO! You simply want know how one feels or breaks verses this one or that one unless you have friends who have different ones for you to try or by reading someones reviews on the Internet. I selected the one I'm using from a lot of reviews I read and simply by just trial and error. To describe the differences in trigger pull pounds I'll let someone else describe that, but I've gone by, lighter the trigger pull more precise type of shooting Sniper, Bench-rest and the heavier the trigger pull the more combat driven, street officer working types.

The one I chose and have in my AR is the Timney 4# and love it. I've used it without any issues for home defense, bench-rest shooting and hunting and it seems to be perfect for me and my needs. The only other trigger I've had any experience with is the standard Mil spec (single stage) trigger on my dept. issue M16A1 and to compare the two triggers is like describing the differences between night and day. It sure would be nice to test drive different AR's and their parts before purchase but that's not the case where I live. There aren't any shooting expos that come near my area, which maybe your closest opportunity. My only opportunity is the Internet and forums like 68Forums, which is a tremendous help and a very nice tool for me! :D

Its the same way down here is South GA RoAus, I'm the only person I know building a "custom" AR. Ive got a plethora of friends with bone stock RRA, Bushmaster, DPMS and one firend with a Sig 556. I jsut did the research and found what I think is the most reliable aftermarket trigger I could find, since my priority is a carry weapon for my patrol car. So i went with a WOA/RRA 2 stage. Have you put any thought into the Bill Springfield 4# trigger upgrade for 50 bucks or so?

I have a Chip McCormack 4 lb. in my 7.5" 5.56 AR and a 3 lb. Timney in my 16" 6.8 SPC AR. The CMC is pretty sweet but the Timney is spectacular. The pull is very crisp and smooth with absolutely zero over-travel. The reset is short and 3 lbs. is not too light. I use the 6.8 for 3-gun matches and really like this setup.

No, I haven't actually and wasn't aware of the up grade at all, but I'm quite please with my Timney just the way it is. By the way, the WOA/RRA 2 stage you went with was a very close second I was considering because of all the rave reviews I was reading about it. The only thing that changed my mind at he last second was never have shot a 2 stage before. I will more than likely pick one up to go in my next build, I'm very interested in it.

I've been thoroughly impressed with the Bill Springfield (http://www.triggerwork.net/) trigger. $75 and under 5 minutes.

Have shot several different stock triggers with a wide variety of "quality" Bushy being at the bottom for gritty, stiff pull, Olympic for a nice, light 4lb break albeit single stage with a lot of takeup and the GI colts and FNs being somewhere in between. Competition and drop ins: Geissele (sp?) 2 stage absolute best I've shot. Rock River 2stage is a close second for a fraction of the price. I put a single stage 4# from Timney into a varmint rifle I built for a freind and I thought it was very good but a little more creep than I thought it should have for the money. He loves it---and thats all that matters. Sounds like you are looking for a decent trigger for GP. Try the Rock River if you can find one. If you don't like it you won't have any trouble getting rid of it or getting it tweaked by White Oak or the other after market shops.
