View Full Version : Who makes a short and effective flash hider

I'm building an SBR and want a flash hider that's effective but not overly long. It kind of defeats the point of getting an SBR if my hider makes the thing too long. I'm interested in getting a phantom, but don't know how long they are. What do you boys recommend?

Hands down, the Smith Vortex followed by the Sailors Machine Phoenix. The YHM Phantom is great for the .223, but it is huge for the 6.8.

I looked for the phoenix, but can't find anything. Does anyone have a link or website?

From what I've found the Vortex is only available in 9/16-24.
Is it available in the 5/8 thread?

Does anyone have any low light photos of the different flash hiders with the 6.8?

I've been told that the A2 is the shortest one available, can anyone confirm this? I've never had anything to complain about using the A2 on a 5.56, do they suck on a 6.8?

I have only A2 flash hiders on my 6.8's. IMO they are fine with the 14.5" and longer barrels, especially with the 6.8 as the caliber uses faster powders than average than the 5.56. I am thinking about getting the Smith Vortex for my 8.5" PSD but, like you, I don't want to add to much more length to the carbine. I've done night shoots with the A2 hider and my 14.7" 6.8 and I didn't notice the flash.

I think I am going to get the A2 on my Xtreme and see how it does at night, I have the 5C2 on my 55 carbine and have never noticed a flash at night with that, and the A2 on my work rifle flash has never bothered me either.

Vltor makes a nice one. Kinda scarce, had to order it direct but they have a short and a long version threaded 5/8x24.

The AAC BLACKOUT is the most efficient flash hider. There is a .308 5/8-24 version. Also it has 3 prongs which, due to each being wider, are stronger than 4-prong designs.

Is it huge like the YHM phantom?
I have one of those, and it kind of ruins the look of the rifle.

I believe it is the length of a Phantom or Vortex but longer than an A2. Oh I see, this thread was about A2 length flash hiders. I took "short" to mean "no longer than a Vortex."

Now that would be sweet to see and even try to photograph!

The AAC Blackout is pretty impressive in that link! Isn't that pretty much what the three prong was, that they used in Nam, where it was supposed to be a wirecutter as well? Sure looks a lot like it. They were fairly small too weren't they? Anybody have any hands-on with it???

The Vietnam three prong seems to be no more effective than an A2 Birdcage. The AAC BLACKOUT has three prongs, but is otherwise a different design. It seems to be about 10% more effective than a Smith Vortex and also stronger. FN adopted it for the SCAR rifle.

The Vltor looks good! KB1 likes his, does anyone else have experience with these? On their site, the 5/8x24 is listed for .30 cal. Is it typical to use .30 hiders for the 6.8?

Yup, everyone seems to use .30 cal flash suppressors for the 6.8. Any idea how much the AAC Blackout costs? I checked their web sight and it shows the page under construction. I like the look of the Vltor. How do they compare? I tend to shy away from open designs like the Vortex because I've had them catch on gear before. That doesn't mean I'm not open to getting one, though.

Here is the non-silencer mount 556 version if you can use 1/2-28 and make sure the bullet passes (I don't know if it will):

If you have 5/8-24 then I think only the $100 retail 762-SD mount would work as there is no non-silencer mount version yet for larger calibers.

i like the sound of my noveske kx3 pig on my 5.56. Dunno if it really hides flash though lol.
