While Im bulidling up my 6.8, im am thinking also of the optics. My weapon will be primarrly used as a HD. and secondly as a hunting tool. so Ive always thought an eotech for home and a magnifier with it for hunting. I read all the posts here and I see the most shots are averaging under 150 yards. with the set up Im consitering I think it will be fine, but most pics I see are with scopes. whats the opinon and why? thank you.

If you want no magnification, a red dot is the way to go. If you want magnification, a 1x4 scope is a better choice, IMHO. The Trijicon 1x4 Accupoint would be a great choice.

For your applications you listed. I agree with the trijicon 1x4 accupoint. I have a 2.5-10x50 rifle scope, but thats because I primarily hunt with my 6.8. Another option, is you could get an eo-tech on a larue mount, and have another magnified optic on a seperate larue mount. This way you could swap optics depending on your intended use at that time.

MSU, are you revering to a "flip to side mount" that's what I was thinking of. An Eotech and a flip out or removable 3 or 4 x magnifier

I think he was referring to the Cantilever mounts, which hold your zero. So when your doing close range HD type stuff, leave the EOtech on, and when you go to the range thrown a magnified scope on, each with a cantilever mount to hold the zero. I personally am going to go with an EOTech and a flip to side mount for a 3X optic.

Thats the Magnifier I am probably going to go with. I purchased one of his Comp M4 style red dots, and was really happy with the sturdiness of it.

Burris is also coming out with an affordable Burris AR_Tripler (http://www.burrisoptics.com/artripler.html)

And the Burris AR-Pivot Ring (http://www.burrisoptics.com/arpivotring.html)

.

A scope "gathers" light.

Red Dot's don't.

Light conditions are a consideration with any optic/sight.

Below is the same answer I always give when this type of question keeps coming up:

What optics are durable enough to withstand the rigors of combat with our Nation's top warriors?

1. For CQB/home defence from 0-100, the Aimpoints, particularly the T1, in a LaRue mount are the best option currently available. Adding a Aimpoint (not EOTECH) 3x magnifier in a LaRue LT649 mount allows a useful optic for the 100-300 range.

2. For mid-range work, a low power variable in the 1-4x range is the way to go. The S&B 1.1-4x Short Dot is the standard which all others are judged by. The NF 1-4x is nice as well. For those on a budget, the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x and Leup 1.5-5x have proven to work in combat as well. LaRue SPR-E or SPR-1.93 (to clear a 12 o'clock laser) are good choices. Circle-dot reticles are not precise enough for the longer range shots--I'd strongly recommend a standard reticle. The ACOG's are durable and work reasonably well, particularly the 3.5x TA11, but they are not as versatile as a variable power; putting a mini RDS on top of an ACOG is NOT an ideal solution. The Elcan 1-4x has been problematic. FWIW, the Leup CQ/T blows chunks...

3. For mid to long range use, a variable optic around the 3-10x range is the way to go--the S&B 4-16x, the NF 2.5-10x or 3.5-15x are ideal. The Leup 2.5-8x and 3.5-10x have also proven to work well. LaRue SPR mounts work well.

FWIW, I will not use EOTECH's anymore if I have a choice, as I've seen far too many go down unexpectedly compared to Aimponts...

I've been using a T-1 Micro for about six months now and, when funds permit, I will replace all of my other red dots with T-1's. Great sight. I agree with Doc on the EOtechs. My department bought a bunch and we've already sent two back for various issues. Our snipers just received four with the magnifiers for their M4's (sniper support rifles for the observer). The battery compartment keeps popping open during firing, rendering the sight dead.

I think I may go with this:
Millett DMS-1
Ive read a whole lot on it and I say its about 98% possitive.
thank you for your inputs

Hopefully the new EOTechs with the new style battery box will fix the problems. The whole issue is the battery box. The rest of the sight works fine.

I hope they also fix the battery connectors, they can come loose and fall out... I havent had any issues with the few I own but i have seen it happen to others.

It is called the EOTECH XPS2/XPS3. The batteries are sideways so the EOTech is even shorter than the 511. I saw a picture of it before, but I can't find it now.

Thanks--I have checked it out and I didn't love it...

"The whole issue is the battery box. The rest of the sight works fine."

Yup they work fine...except for the crappy battery life, auto-shut off, lousy mounts, and poor CS...

Airbrusher, I have an EOTech 512. Works great for me. I was sold the second I picked up a rifle with this scope, brought it to my shoulder and instantly (with both eyes open) had the dot on the target. It was exactly what I was looking for.

(I also have a 3x magnifier. I'm still debating the value in that. I've always had scope issues due to my glasses.)

Could I hit his left nut vs. the right? I doubt it, but the poor bastard will have a 6.8 hole in his gut.

You didn't ask, but the other thing I did to maximize my limited ability was to get a Bill Springfield (http://triggerwork.net) trigger. Best $75 I've spent in a long time.

I'm not the most experienced shooter on this board (by a considerable margin.) But I've shot enough to know what helps and what doesn't. These two purchases helped me.

I use a very low priced tasco red dot on my mini 14 6.8. On my AR I use a leopold scope for magnification. The red dot is rugged and simple to use. I dont expect to shoot at long distance with my mini so a red dot works fine for me.
