I know this isn't exactly tech but, Paulo will have to read it before he moves it
Article in Fall 2008 issue p. 50 "Sniper Shoot Out" A retired cop in CA uses a 6.8 AR in a LE sniper class and places 2nd over guys with custom high end 308 bolt guns including ones from GAP and Tac Ops.

That's sweet. I will see if I can get a copy and scan something here for all to read.

Keep in mind, if you have two shooters side by side. And you give a student a 1.5 MOA gun and that student can handle that rifle, he will win. If you give a 2nd student a 1/2 MOA gun, and that 2nd student cannot handle that rifle; he will loose every day, all day.
I have seen this many times.
The last class I had, two students came with $7,000 SWS's and both failed in the first 15 mins. Both rifles had the newest high end riflescope on the market and both riflescopes failed. On the other hand, the third student came with a stock rifle, normal riflescopes and made the class all weekend.
Just some thing to point out.

Is that the article someone on 68forums said they wrote? I seem to remember member "nyeti" wrote it.
If its the Surefire Combat Tactics, I wrote the article. I haven't seen it yet. I came away absolutely convinced that a 6.8 SPC AR based rifle is the best bet for 90% of what police snipers need. I started with a 18" LMT MRP, and ended up with a 16" barreled gun that was cut at SUREFIRE and had there muzzle-brake/Suppressor adaptor. The later set-up not only handled better, had less recoil, but it was much more accurate.
Overall, that class sold me on the 6.8 SPC, especially the glass testing, and the unconventional shooting positions, and ease of use under high stress scenarios. My hyper accurate bolt gun is sitting at the bottom of the safe, and the MRP from the article is my first choice for a urban sniper rifle at this point.

Good post John. I really should take one of your classes some day.
We've all read the performance reports and knew the 6.8 would be great in a LE sniper role, now the story is getting out.
I would like to read that article if we can get a scanned copy, if not I'll try to find it myself.

Yes sir,
I do think the 6.8 SPC will fill the roll needed for LEO, the key to LEO Sniping is the under 150yd ability to STAY in the TARGET!!!!!!!
If you have a callout in a mobile home park, the target being under 50yds. Lightly built background noise; a .308win is a liability, so is a .223 over 63grns. So whats the best bullet to use in any caliber that will say in the target or the mobile home without striking a bystander or penetrating more homes.
I have a mentor that was in a situation like this shooting 69grn .223 rem out of a 18" SPR rifle, when all was over with, two rounds went through four mobile homes and stopped in a water heater on the 4th home.

Hell, a pellet gun will go through a mobile home! :D
The truth is, any bullet fit to take down a two legged suspect will also go through walls. It's a catch 22, use a light fragmenting round to reduce the chance of overpenetration and risk under penetration on a suspect. Use a heavier or bonded round and you have an excellent chance of enough pentration in the suspect, but risk over penetration.
I've been on our swat team for nine years. I'm not a sniper but a knuckle dragging entry guy, it takes someone more patient than me and I like to mix it up close. In speaking with the sergeant over our snipers his research shows the average national LE sniper shot is around 60 or 70 yards, I don't remember the exact range. I think the 6.8 offers the best all around package for this role, hell I think it offers the best package for entry, too.
I also read that article and it warmed my heart :D Nothing like success to prove people wrong.

Sir, you are spot on. The ASA Sniper Utilization Survey report is the only book in the U.S. that is a true resource for any LE Sniper. They talk all about the issues a LEO Sniper will find and training points.
I think the 6.8 SPC will fill the need once people start to build correct 6.8 SPC's. If you think about it, a 6.8 SPR @ 18" built right, and good bullets will be a great option for a SWAT / SRT team.

I heard from a reliable source that an agency out west here uses 12.5" 6.8's for everything from entry to sniper ops. Choosing the right round and then training with the system is key here.

Our snipers pull double role as entry guys if they are not needed on the perimeter. A nice 16" SS upper with a decent 1x4 scope would do very well as a dual role weapon for LE.
