View Full Version : Hot chick avatars vs NOT

Okay guys. I've had a couple users voice concerns over the eye candy in the avatars. Personally I don't care one way or the other as long as they are "decent". Here's the deal, we pride ourselves in the fact that we aren't like other sites. So, does this bring us down to that level? Please vote in this poll, you can post your reasons if you want. I think the majority should rule as long as the owners of the site agree.

I don't care either way. Easy enough to turn avatars off if they are not wanted.

Well you already know how I feel, but I will lay out my case. I say No. I've always looked to the 68forums(even before I registered) as the go to for the most current and technical 6.8 info. Infact most of us have tried to direct major firearms players to the 68 forums so they could understand some of the things they are missing when using a spec1 chamber or other non-desirable(ahem....ruger...). I really enjoyed the fact that the flame wars have been kept under control here-very opposite of ARFCOM and one of the majory Archery sites I visit. In fact everyone here seemed to have a great disposition and was very helpfull. To me the nearly naked women cheapen the site and take away from the integrity of the great info here. It gives it a frat-house look, yet that is not at all what 68forums truly is. Like I have said before everyone has the right to run their business the way they see fit, I have the right not to participate if I don't like it. But since you are asking why here is my biggest reason. I am a Christian guy who tries to live my life in a moral and virtueous way. I fall short of that everyday because I'm human. However I try not to put myself in circumstances that get me derailed any more than normal...lol!!! So I can turn the AVATARS off and I won't see them. The problem lies in the fact that I would like to tell everyone I talk to about ARs and Guns and 68 " Hey go check out 68forums.com, you will be up to speed in no time." But I can't do that if I know that they are going to be bombarded with nearly naked women right off the bat. So if you all want to keep the naked babes up, more power to you. Just know that it looks immature and will probably keep the 68 forums from reaching its true potential and influence. But most of all I will miss it.

If you don't like them, just turn it off, we are still all about AR15-6.8 SPC, the avatars don't change that. I live my life normal too, and it doesn't bother me one bit.

Thanks for letting me know you can turn off the Avatars...My personal opinion ( since you asked ) is the pictures are inappropriate for this site. I realize this is a hot issue and everyone will have an opinion. So, should the naked to near naked females be shown here? For me, I came here to learn about the 6.8 and make a decision as to buy one or not. My decision to join was not swayed one way or the other by the Avatars in question.
I am indeed a Christian and am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. That said, the forum rules also make it clear that religious discussions would not be tolerated here and that did not dissuade me from joining. It seems also from reading the forum rules that the site owner/managers wish this to be a place for civil well mannered conversations and so far I have seen this to be the case. So, it just seems logical that leaving out the 'questionable' pictures follow through with the desire for this to be a place everyone would be comfortable with.
Many who visit here such as myself, may not realize the Avatars can easily be turned off. The Bottom line question that management has to ask is: Is the site better or worse for allowing the pictures, or does it have any impact at all ? Thanks to management for bringing up the issue after concern was expressed.
This is one of the FEW gun forums that doesn't have a dedicated hot chick thread or sub forum at Min(and no we don't need one but the Avatars aren't hurting a thing) so to say it affects this site any more than others that are much much larger and have way more support is not true.
If these pic's shouldn't be allowed then no pic should be allowed since there will always be someone(s) that doesn't like what you choose.

Where did this rant come from??? I don't see what your problem is, avatars are just freaking pictures anyway. The way I look at it, the avatars displayed present a level of professionalism we want displayed to non-members that are lurking in "OUR" forum. So, cool your jets and bite your tongue...if you can't do that, then follow through with your ultimatum and leave.

I think there's a fine line in how this should play out. While non of the avatars go past the point nudity, some of them go past teh point of good taste. My personal preference is that I don't care, but I'm not the only person who sees these pictures. Folk get on here and these pictures are a first impression, not to mention there are people who can't have these up due to work or family. Also the site default is to have teh avatars show, making beginning visitors and less astute users basically stuck with having to look at them. While I voted for them to stay as a matter of course, I think there needs to be a clear line as to what is allowed. While I have no problem with any of them in their own right, the avatars that are designed as smut will eventually run out folk who are less radical and more level and attract folk who aren't a good representation of these forums or its purpose.

I did display my hot chick avatars for awhile, but when it was questioned on whether or not they were appropriate I removed mine. Now the question is what's best for the forum. From what I've gathered, this is a technical forum, and one that tries to promote the 6.8mm SPC by development from the site sponsors and feedback from the members. It's been said before, the hot chick avatars are all in good fun, and they don't violate any terms or conditions of this forum. If this is going to turn into an endless debate, the admins or mods simply need to remove the option for members having an avatar at all. Another option to to get someone from Wilson Combat, our forum owner, to chime in and make the decision.

On one hand, I'm not really concerned about it. I haven't had 'virgin' eyes since I stumbled across my neighbor's Playboy collection when I was a kid. On the other hand, I have a daughter that I would do anything to protect. God help the man who tries to exploit my daughter in that way because I will have no mercy on him. I voted against them for that reason. Maybe there's a way to turn them off for non-registered visitors (first impressions and all) and members who have an issue with them can just turn all avatars off.
I sure hope you guys never go to SHOT show, the one thing that competes with the number of guns there is half dressed girls.
I'm sure companies like Dillon and Magpul who release and promote their monthly chick calenders are not hurt in any way by this and I'm willing to be we gain as many or more members due to the avatars than we loose.
I feel for those who try and shelter their children from swim suite pictures, when my 7yo daughter ask why those girls are in their swim suites I tell her they are models and pretty girls help sell guns, she doesn't think another thing about it since every other industry and TV commercial is the same way, it's best to explain it not hide it.
I am all for keeping it civil and not showing any nudity or sexual acts but the pretty girls with guns like you see in mags and on TV are not a problem.

In this case it's not so much political correctness, as it is some Christians trying to force their "high moral" standards on everyone. I say the Romans had the right idea: Feed 'em all to the lions.

Apparently live and let live is way to much to ask in these sensitive times. The avatarts are not hurting anyone or anything. Some people just can't make it through a day without attempting to enforce their will on everyone.

I say let em stay! If we ban them then people will just find something else to gripe about and say they are offended. Next will prob be the gory dead hogs that offends those with a weak stomach then ill have to get rid of my 1911 avatar because its not 6.8 related, after that we will have to make sure our username is relevant to the site and before too long this forum will fade away because we will get tired of making a post and wondering if we were politically correct or will I get banned from the site for offending somebody with my opinion.

The anti-Christian comments are not part of this discussion. Your post was in bad taste, and is pretty much a discriminatory comment Stan. I wouldn't have expected that from you.
I think the avatars as PG for the most part, are fine as is. Making a derogatory comment about someone's religion is not fine. You should apologize.

I don't care what people display as their avatars...I doubt anything they could display would offend me anyway. Have any of you been to a mall, a walmart or bar lately, you see much worse at any of those places. I have some images that I wish I could forget because some people have no taste. I think the avatars take nothing away from the information I have gathered here all it does is offer some of the members another way to relate to each other. If you can't relate to it leave it alone.

Lastly run a class that the word is AVATAR as well. Had a salesman keep saying recticle to me yesterday I finally said the word is RETICLE!

Hmm, I dunno, but to me they kinda enhance the forum. Kinda takes the dry stuffiness out of the air and makes me chuckle a bit. Of course though I don't read this site on my bosses dime, nor do I let my kids who aren't old enough to even own a gun peruse the site, and neither is my Christian wife offended by them either, as last time I checked she has a fairly well established sense of her own self worth and knows her husband is both loyal and trustworthy, so all in all it seems to be much ado over nothing. As the saying goes, just turn it off if you don't like it. Personally, I happen to admire the beauty that God has created in the female form, but then maybe that's just me. I choose not to join the Taliban. I say just say no to burkas.
Oh well, to each there own.
It is a straight forward poll with 2 options. Arguments have been made both ways and there isn't really a need for some of the commentary that has since developed. I think it is a unique situation that the users of the forum are included in this decision making, regardless of paid status (mainly, cause you can't pay right now anyway).
Vote your opinion, leave it at that. The thread is stickied now to stay on top.

As much as I agree with the latter portion of your first sentence (stanc)... (since TRUE "Christianity" has nothing to do with "forcing" "high moral standards"), and that tactic bothered me quite a bit last night as I was going to sleep (when religion got inserted into the thread)... I decided to leave it alone and not comment. However... your "Feed 'em all to the lions" remark" is way out of line in my book too. That's not cute... and is no less hateful than to throw a white sheet over your head and start talking of hanging people for having a different skin color. I am more convinced than ever that you appear to thrive on stirring things up and to get heated debates flowing. You do it with ANY moment there's a 6.5 comment too. Your remark WAS in bad taste, and just illustrates the point. You've sunk to a new low in my eyes with that remark.

No real dog in this fight, aside from letting the ole song "Politics, Religion and who ever the heJJ it was" go. Funny thing is I wasn't offened but I'm in the evil minority, CATHOLIC! :a21: It only gets worse, just go eyes left and you get the idea, and yes that's me leering at all those scantily clad avatars. So while opinions may be as plentiful as a certain area of one's 5th point of contact, that little first ammendment thingy came before the 2nd ammendment thingy which I belive we all celibrate. So I guess if you are offended turn the avatar function off and your coinciance is put to rest. For me I like 'em, and yes Fr. I personally voted to take them off, however i can see the argument on both sides and don't really care what is decided for the most part. I just turned my avatars off.
I think an important argument was already made that is being largely ignored...How does this make us look to the outside world? Like it or not you should all realize that there are a large number of people that will be turned off by these avatars and leave or never get involved to begin with. How is that helping to promote the 6.8? One large example is women. Now there are plenty of girls out there with thick skin and a good sense of humor, but i would bet for the most part they are not interested in looking at half naked chicks any more than us guys would be interested in staring a some male Chip-n-dale type models. Just food for thought guys. I also think there is a certain level of anonymity that makes people think this stuff is okay online. Would you post the same type of pictures on the side of your care driving around town for everyone to see? If the answer is no, then why would you post it on here for everyone to see?

There is plenty of eye candy of any type to be found on the web. Good gun forums are also abundant. I like both but I'm of the mindset that the 2 don't mix real well. Kind of like going to a fight and a hockey game breaks out...or is that the other way around? I can live with it either way but what about the wives/girlfriends/children that we would like to see enjoying our love for the 6.8? What do you think they think?

I like this forum and have learned a lot, but I am a bit surprised by some of the "high post count" elites around here making things personal with derogatory and intolerant remarks while talking about freedom of expression and not letting some shadowy "they" take everything away. If we are going to make this about freedom of expression then let's go all the way with it ... remove the prohibition against religious and political threads and let's have some real freedom of expression here! I don't think you can have it both ways ... let people put hot chicks as their alter egos (aka avatars) but don't let people discuss politics or religious issues on the forum and then when people say hot chick avatars are probably not the best PR for the forum start talking about the 1st amendment. There seems to be one excellent idea emerging from this. Change the default to not show the avatar for those who are first time users. Perhaps that is a solution or at least one that could be put to a vote. This of course is coming from a newb, with a low post count, who should be fed to the Lions because he is a Christian, and is trying to force his high morals on everyone, along with Political Correctness. Well, actually that is not correct.
Even in a family you will find dissent and disagreement on some things and that is to be expected here as well. God made us all the same but different, it is how we deal with those differences that is important. When it doubt refer to the Golden Rule, that will usually give the best answer as how to deal with others.
Just my 2 cents...next...

Stan you're pissing everyone off, stop, please! I don't know how ya do it, but you can stir sh*t up faster than tossing a bobcat in a barrel full of barbed wire.
Bull, I don't understand it, either. I seldom intentionally try to piss off anybody. It seems to just happen. Perhaps it's an innate character trait?
And that "bobcat" line is sure on target. Eloquently put. :a31:

What? Did anyone..... ? What? Are we talking about religion and politics now? Why don't we just have people who don't want to see the Avatars turn them off? All this nonsense is rediculous.

Some in this thread have tried to connect this topic with the 1st amendment as a way to strengthen their position that the avatars are just free speech and any talk of not allowing them is a violation of their 1st amendment rights by some morality police B.S. Others have brought bigoted anti-Christian statements into the thread. So politics and religion have already been brought up. I'm just saying ... if they want to make this about free speech then let's go all the way with it and remove the restrictions on free expression of politics and religion. When it was just one or two, it was kind of cool. Now a bunch of followers who are just trying to be "cool" started copying the trendsetters to the extent that you cannot look at a thread without seeing a string of barely dressed electronic hotties.

Has it really come this far that this dumb ass thread has become a sticky??? Someone please just close this tread and remove the sticky. The longer this goes on, the more ridiculous this tread gets. Free speech/expression, religion, politics...get real people, this should be about common decency and/or professionalism and nothing more.

Would not have come up at all except for certain individuals trying to impose their will on everyone. Clearly this is why religion and politics are off limits. First, there is no "common decency" in trying to impose your will in a public forum. Second, this is not a work site or work environment so "professionalism' is a misplaced concept in terms of a recreational gun/weapons/ammo forum. I come here to relax not work.

And those who are putting chicks in their avatars are not trying to impose something on the rest of the members of the forum? As one of my favorite musicians once said, "before you start pointing fingers… Make sure your hands are clean" (Bob Marley).
Religion and politics never came up until the people in favor of the avatars brought it into the equation. According to the no politics policy this thread should have been locked and deleted as soon as one of the high post count guys talked about the 1st amendment and as soon as stanc made his bigoted anti-Christian remarks.
And actually professionalism is a part of this forum because many of the main manufacturers and companies that are continuing to give this caliber a legitimate place in the AR community make this forum one of the best around by their contribution. Most of them know a thing or two about public relations and how impressions can make or break one's success in the marketplace.
This thread is getting ridiculous lol
Admin just needs to decide what kind of avatars are allowed and that's it. We'll abide by those rules or else.... plain and simple, No poll needed imo. I can't believe this all started over a few ppl that are offended by good looking woman in sexy attire.. get a freakin life

You can turn them off like you can turn the channel on the TV. Nothing is being forced upon you. I don't even have a damn avatar and don't give a crap what anyone chooses to use as their own. As long as what they do does not have any physical impact on me or my stuff I could give a rats hairy little ass.
Why do the self righteous need to impose their crap on all around them? Screw this I'm done with this ****. You American Taliban can have your damn puritanical website . I'm out. Mods, please hit me with the ban hammer. **** this!

Interesting reaction. You do realize that there is a poll on page one, right, and the voting is thus far in favor of leaving the avatars alone? I don't think that is very Talibani (Talibanist, Talibanesque, etc). No need for a hammer, and there isn't even a screen door should anyone choose to use it.
There is no gag order here, but please keep the banter to a minimum. Vote the poll and leave it at that.

I'm pretty sure jwp was referring not to the poll, but to the attitude of those whose complaints brought about the poll and some others who support the proposed ban. That attitude is something these people have in common with the Taliban, who also object to such images.

So back on TOPIC!!! i vote to keep them on.
As many have pointed out the Default setting should change, if possible, to no Avatars, for guests and "lurkers". Not saying anything bad about guests or lurkers, but if you want to truly be a part of the forum, register. THE END!!!
