Hello folks.

I have another review to share with you. This is the Phalanx Flash Hider from Addax Tactical.

I was contacted by Chris with Addax Tactical a month ago about testing out his new Phalanx Flash Hider. I agreed and the test unit was sent.

My first impressions of the Phalanx were good. First thing I noticed were 6 prongs all equally spaced. First thing that came to mind, “no crush washer will be needed”. The Phalanx has two machined flats to properly torque it down and if you desire, you can use a crush or peel washer to index the flats horizontally or vertically. It is designed however to not need them and fit snug against the barrel. The test unit I received indexed with the flats vertical after being torqued down. The Phalanx is very well machined. No excess tool marks were found and the Nitride finish has held up very well after close to 10 range trips and 450 rounds of 5.56 and 6.8 down range. No burs or sharp points to snag clothing, bags or skin. Looking closer at the inside of the prongs, they appear to be cone shaped. After speaking with Chris, he informed me that this unique design is suppose to be very effective in reducing flash.

The Phalanx weighs 2.6 ounces and is 2.1“ long. Comparably the A2 weighs in at 2.0 ounces and is 1.750“ long. The Phalanx is 1/2x28 threaded and is designed for the 5.56 line of barrels. I happen to have a 6.8 barrel that is threaded 1/2x28 so I was able to test it out with both calibers. The Phalanx’s muzzle hole is cut large enough to safely shoot 6.8 and 6.5 diameter bullet, but it is threaded for the smaller 1/2x28. So if you happen to have a 6.8, 6.5 or 6mm diameter barrel with the 1/2x28 pitch threads, the Phalanx will work for you.

The Phalanx is a dedicated Flash Hider so testing the Phalanx’s ability to reduce recoil and muzzle flip, was not completed. However I did test the Phalanx against an A2 Flash Hider and a bare barrel. Compared to these, the Phalanx did have a very noticeable reduction in perceived recoil. Nothing like a dedicated Compensator, but was noticeable and kept muzzle flip down to a minimum even when shooting the 6.8.

When shooting the barrel with no Flash Hider, each time the view in the scope would be totally covered with flash. I was about 10 yards from the burm so I was rapid firing, but if I were to be taking precision shots, there is no way to fire that fast accurately. When shooting with the A2, there was a present flash in the scope. It was not near as blinding as with no Flash Hider, but will still slow your shooting at range down.

Shooting the Phalanx produced no flash present in the scope. I fired the Phalanx in pitch dark with no flash present. It surprised me as I was expecting some. There was none.

Here is a video comparing the Phalanx, A2 and no flash hider. These are all I have in my arsenal at the moment to test. Most if not everyone is familiar with the A2 and its capabilities. The Phalanx did a great job cutting the flash (for the shooter) down to nothing compared to the A2.

To wrap this review up, I have to say that I am very impressed with the Phalanx. Machine and finish will score a perfect 10. No left over tooling marks or finish imperfections. Very easy to install with a standard flash hider wrench. You can use a crush washer if you wish, but its not needed. Retail price on the Phalanx is 39.95 and its only available through Addax Tactical at this time. Overall this is a Flash Hider that I would gladly install on my weapons. When it comes to items like these, form wins over function more than half the time, but with the Phalanx, you get the best of both.
