View Full Version : The SIG SG 550: What it could of been
The SG 550 is a superb rifle that is accurate, reliable and very smooth shooting for a piston gun. During the Swiss Army trials they could have selected either the 5.6mm GP90 (which is interchangeable with 5.56mm NATO) or the 6.45x48mm round. Unfortunately, the Swiss military selected the 5.6mm and adopted the SG 550 as the Stgw 90.It would have been interesting if the Swiss had adopted the SG 550 in 6.45mm because it would have had performance similar to the 6.8mm SPC (although I assume the 6.8mm SPC has better soft tissue destruction).
I'm just wondering what other people think of the idea of a SG 550 in 6.45mm caliber. Also, what do you guys think of the SG 550?

I think that's an outstanding idea, and it is a pity the Swiss military went with 5.6x45 instead. Performance of 6.45x48 would be much superior to 6.8 SPC, insofar as exterior ballistics are concerned. Think of it as a "6.5 Grendel Magnum."
I haven't seen any gel tests for 6.45x48, so cannot judge whether or not 6.8 SPC has better soft tissue destruction.
